Critical History
Sergej Vrišer attributed the sculptures of St George and St Martin of Tours in Regional Museum Maribor to Philipp Jakob Straub.1 The original location of the two sculptures is not documented, but it is believed they came from the castle Kozjak near Spodnja Kungota. Vrišer compared the sculptures with those from the high altar of Italian Church (Welsche Kirche) in Graz, which is also an attributed work of Philipp Jakob Straub.2
Construction / Execution
Sculptures are made of wood. They are naturalistically painted. The drapery is gilded and silvered. Some silver parts of the drapery are painted with red or green lacquer to imitate precious stones. The carvings which are imitating metal, such as helmet, sword, spear and curb are gilded or silvered.
