Critical History

The sculptures of St John of Nepomuk, St Florian, two angels with cartouches and two vases in Rococo style from the staircase in front of the church in Ptujska Gora were attributed to Joseph Straub by Sergej Vrišer.1

We should point out that the sculpture of St Florian is identical in posture to the sculptures of the same saint on a façade in Sladka gora, in Dravograd and in Nagykanizsa (Hungary); note that the sculptures in Dravograd and in Nagykanizsa are made of wood. In addition to the posture, the details on all the four sculptures are carved in the same manner (the dress, the helmet, the bucket of water, the burning house beside the saint’s feet).

The sculpture of St John of Nepomuk can be compared with the sculpture of the same saint in Slivnica pri Mariboru and in Negova – both works are newly attributed to Joseph Straub. We should point out the characteristic folds of the clothes and the typical attention to detail (the buttons, lace and curly hair).

Construction / Execution

The sculptures are made of sandstone. They are situated on the staircase leading to the main entrance of the church. They have smoothened back sides because they are visible from all sides. The original sculpture of St John of Nepomuk was moved under the roof by the church walls and its copy was placed on the staircase.

Comment

The sculptures are badly damaged by weather influence. The sandstone is cracking and crumbling. The surface is covered with lichen in some parts. On the sculpture of St John of Nepomuk two fingers on the right hand and part of the palm branch are missing. The cross with the sculpture of Jesus and St John´s head are badly abraded. The sandstone is preserved only on a few areas under the sculpture´s drapery. The remains of grey polychromy are visible there.
