Critical History
The relief was bought in 1939. Kurt Woisetschläger1 attributed it to the workshop of Philipp Jakob Straub and dated it about 1780-1790. Christine Rabensteiner follows this opinion hereby.
The ornaments with the nodus and ribbon above and the scale-like row on the sides are typical for the late 18th century. In Austria this period was the time of Joseph II (so called Josefinische Kunst).
Construction / Execution
It is a relief made of lime wood; it's carved concave, with original gilding (matte and polished). Missing parts have been replaced. In the upper part there is still one part of the ribbon missing.
