Second General Meeting in Ljubljana
Slovenian partners organized and hosted the Second General Meeting of the TrArS project on 13 and 14 June 2018. The meeting was held at the Institute for the Protection of Cultural Heritage of Slovenia, Restoration Center. The participants were welcomed by Jernej Hudolin, Managing Director of the Institute for the Protection of Cultural Heritage of Slovenia, and Robert Peskar, PhD, Head Conservator of Slovenia.
This particular meeting consisted of two parts. The first part focused on presentation of the activities and results gained during research on the national level as well as the expert group fieldwork. The participants reported on new discoveries, open research questions, observation of the current state of the Straub artworks, materials and the dissemination of the results and promotional activities. A special attention was dedicated to the largely completed online database.
In the afternoon partners have visited The National Gallery of Slovenia (Joseph Straub’s work with unknown provenance, as well as statues by Veit Königer and Joseph Holzinger) and Ljubljana Cathedral with the examples of the contemporary church equipment (altarpieces, organ) that Joseph Straub was able to study during his stay in Ljubljana.
The second part of the general meeting was dedicated to important discussions and conclusions of the editorial board, where issues regarding the content and the design of the monograph were addressed. The meeting continued with the visit and the presentation of the Department for Wood of the Restoration Centre by conservator-restorer and project partner Saša Dolinšek. Ferdinand Šerbelj, PhD, an expert in baroque art, also joined the participants for a brief moment. A special attention was given to the Joseph Straub’s sculptures in the process of conservation and restoration (from Regional Museum Maribor and Štanjel) and the accompanying discussions. Katja Kavkler, PhD, the head of the department prepared an interesting lecture about the analysis of the samples taken from Straub’s sculptures in Slovenia. The group also visited the Department for Classic Canvas Painting, presented by Barbara Gosar Hirci, MA, the head of the department.
